Description
Numbers 1 to 15, Cricklewood, is a terrace of sixteen houses with attached forecourt and area railings, dating from approximately the 1840s and 1850s. They are constructed of stucco over brick, with slate roofs and brick party-wall stacks. The houses have a double depth plan, with service ranges to the rear.
The houses are two storeys high, with a basement level, and each has two windows on the first floor. They feature a first-floor band, a crowning frieze and cornice (where original), and a low parapet with copings. The left-hand side of the ground floor is rusticated. Original windows are predominantly 6/6 sashes, although some 8/8 and 1/1 horned sashes are also present. Basement windows are 6/6 sashes. All windows are set in plain reveals with sills. The main entrances, which are mostly at the right-hand side of the houses, consist of 4-panel doors with lower flush panels and overlights, some with margin-lights. A projecting two-storey bay features a similar entrance. The left return of the houses is two storeys high, with three first-floor windows; the left and centre windows have 6/6 sashes, while the remainder are blind. A first-floor band is decorated with an incised anthemion motif, and a crowning frieze and cornice are also present. The central entrance has steps leading to a 6-panel door with an overlight containing glazing bars, set within a Doric architrave.
Interior features include original joinery and plasterwork, including dogleg staircases with stick balusters and wreathed handrails. Number 4 retains particularly good interior decoration, with ground floor ceilings decorated with mid-19th century Crace-style stencil work in multiple colors and gilt detailing, especially highlighting cornice work; the doors and other fittings are in keeping with the style.
Subsidiary features include tent-roofed porches to numbers 2, 9, and 10, which have scrolled lozenge motifs on their uprights and openwork friezes. Arrowhead railings with urn finials on the stanchions are present at the sides of the steps throughout, as well as to the forecourts of numbers 3 and 16. X-motif area railings are also present. Window boxes with embellished road and scroll motifs are visible at numbers 7 (ground floor) and 10, while number 9 features a scroll motif.
