Description

Early 19th century boundary walls, piers, railings, gates, and steps serving numbers 38 to 44. The walls are constructed of limestone ashlar and cast iron. Across the site, a coursed rubble wall forms the main boundary, topped with a coping stone. Panels of cast iron railings are set upon this wall, featuring fleur-de-lys heads, top and bottom rails, and ball feet. The railings are separated into groups of four by plain square piers with cross-roll cappings. Two taller square piers, also with cross-roll cappings, mark the center of the boundary, incorporating four stone steps. Further steps are divided to the right and left, contained by a coped retaining wall, leading to a pointed plank gate at number 38. To the upper end, to the left, is a high, plain ashlar pier with a capping. The wall runs from this pier to the front of number 44, following the steep slope of the hill. The lower 1.5 meters of the wall is built of large, coursed and squared stone with a flush capping, which has been raised a further 1.25 meters using large ashlar blocks, finishing with a rounded coping. These boundary walls are significant, complementing the adjacent buildings and defining the enclosure of the street in this area.
