Description
The pair of houses at 51 and 53 Lyncombe Hill date from the early 19th century. They are constructed of limestone ashlar with a slate roof. The symmetrical main range has a single depth and a central blind bay, with wings set slightly back containing the entrance doors. The steeply sloping site causes an additional storey to be visible at the rear. Each floor has one window, featuring large sixteen-pane sashes; the first floor windows have sliding louvered shutters, while ground floor shutters have been removed. A deep mid-platband and bracketed eaves run along the front, leading to a hipped roof with large ashlar stacks centrally on each side of the ridge, and a coped party wall. The left-hand house (No. 51) has a six-panel door beneath a flat, segmental head over a swagged fanlight. A lean-to addition to the front features full-width casements. The right-hand wing has a twelve-pane sash above a six-panel door with a deep margin pane transom light and a segmental head; this wing has its own hipped roof and steps leading down to the rear, where a further narrow bay has been added. The rear elevation is three storeys high, with sixteen-pane sashes and iron balcony railings to the middle floor. The central light is blind but No. 51 has sixteen pane, plain, and margin pane sashes. A deep mid platband and eaves band are present, with the wings set back at each end. The interiors have not been inspected.
