Description

The pair of houses at 47 and 49 Lyncombe Hill date from the early 19th century. They are constructed of limestone ashlar with a slate roof. The houses have a single-depth plan with a wide frontage, and later, set-back bays were added to each end. The steeply sloping site creates the impression of an additional storey at the rear.

The front elevation is three storeys plus a lower ground floor, with two windows to each house. The windows are twelve-pane sashes in plain reveals. Number 47 includes a basement area, and number 49 has a glazed laylight to its basement. Each house has a six-panel door with a segmental head featuring a swagged fanlight, a keystone, a recessed surround, two glazed panels, small sidelights, a flat hood supported by shaped wood brackets, and a carved barge board. Two platbands, a cornice, a blocking course, and a parapet run along the front. A central ashlar stack is present. A two-storey wing to the left has a slate mansard roof with a large twelve-pane dormer and an area to the lower ground floor featuring a wide glazed infill to a broad segmental arch.

The rear elevation extends over four floors. Most windows are sixteen-pane sashes in deep reveals, although number 49 has French doors leading to a balcony with a railing. The rear also features three platbands and a parapet. The end gables are constructed of coursed squared stone with plain parapets. Interior details are not known.
