Description

No. 30 Abbey Lodge is a detached villa built around 1830 in a Tudorbethan style. It is constructed of limestone ashlar with a slate roof. The house is based on a compact square block, with a rear entrance porch and a deep wing to the rear, topped with a mansard roof. A later, lower block has been added to the left of the original range, and the house stands well back and elevated from the road.

The three-storey main range and basement feature two windows to the first and second floors, all with two-light, small-paned casements in flush surrounds, with moulded drips above. A ground-floor window has a transom and margin panes, also with a drip, opening onto a terrace with a stone balustrade and a flight of steps. Octagonal buttresses with weathering and cornices are present at the corners, continuing as slender, octagonal pinnacles above crenellations. The added left block incorporates a two-light casement above a three-light bay with a balustrade, and a stepped-back single bay. A balustraded terrace runs across the front of this section. The main entrance is at the rear, on the south side, within a crenellated porch with octagonal corner piers and finials, over a four-centred doorway. A two-light casement sits above a French casement, both with margin panes and stopped drips. A two-storey later range is situated on the right side, and a wing to the rear has a two-light gabled dormer and an external gable with four small, diagonal ashlar stacks. A conservatory, now in poor condition, runs across the back of the house. A later block partially obscures the lower parts of the original range.

An inspection in 1998 noted that original casement windows and a Gothic fireplace remain in situ.
