Description
The gate piers, gate, and boundary walls to Abbey Lodge were built in the early 19th century. They are made of limestone ashlar and iron. The exterior features a tall pair of plain octagonal piers with low weathered cappings on a bed-mould, which are linked by a low iron overthrow and contain a simple iron gate. This structure is set on four broad steps. On either side, there are boundary walls in coursed squared stone, with the right wall coped and the left wall rough weathered. The right wall sweeps up to a return wall bounding the site, while the left wall continues across the full width of the site in a series of small steps. These walls are part of a continuous run on this side of the street and serve as an important visual complement to the surrounding buildings.
