Description
The boundary wall and gate piers to The Priory and The Old Rectory are likely from the early 20th century, possibly designed by W M Godfrey for E.J. Horniman. They may be located on the site of 17th-century walls. The walls are constructed of coursed and squared rubble and dry-stone rubble. The wall surrounding The Priory is slightly curved and stands about 12 meters high, featuring coping along the top. It includes tall central gate piers with a cornice and gadrooned ogee capping, as well as hinge pilasters topped with scrolls. The boundary wall for The Old Rectory is lower and built at right angles, also made of dry-stone rubble with coping. It has two ashlar gate piers and an end pier with simple capping, along with an oak plank door that has well-crafted early 20th-century strap hinges. This structure is an important feature in the town.
