Description

Burford Primary School, along with its boundary wall and railings, was built in 1877. The school features coursed and squared rubble with a plain tile roof and is designed in a vernacular style. Notable architectural elements include coped gables with steps that have party traceries, cut and shaped finials, and mullioned windows with transoms and cornices. The building is a single storey with three gables at the front. The left-hand gable projects by one bay and is wider, featuring corbelled finials and a three-light window, along with a string course that includes a lozenge date panel. The two right-hand gables extend above the eaves and have side pilasters topped with ball finials, flanking a broached chimney with a diagonal shaft at its base. There is a heavy bellcote on the east gable with an arched opening. Access to the school is through a low extension with a gable to the left, which has a moulded elliptical-headed doorway and a three-light transom window with a cornice and corbelled ball finials, extended by a short bay to the right. The boundary wall is constructed of rubble and features chamfered coping with wall-buttresses that support ball-copped dies, short railings with flattened heads between them, and three gateways. The railings connect the school to the wall.
