Description

This is a burgage house, dating from the 15th or 16th century but altered in the 18th and mid-19th centuries. It has been divided into two houses, with the west house further subdivided. The construction is of coursed and dressed rubble with a chamfered plinth, and a Cotswold stone roof. There are four chimneys, grouped to serve the two separate houses. The house is arranged around a U-shaped plan to the rear. It is two storeys high and has a 3:2 window arrangement. The windows are sashes, with single vertical glazing bars in "The Glen" and multi-pane glazing bars in "Portland Priory Close". "The Glen" has an angled bay on the right-hand side. The doorcases are moulded (ogee-quirk-ogee, stopped on the chamfered plinth) and are of 16th-century design. The Portland Priory Close doorcase is less damaged and has a stilted label. The doors are 6-panel, with the top two panels of "The Glen" being glazed. A wing at the rear of "The Glen" features single-light, moulded windows, a Tudor-arched rear doorway made of stone, and a plastered render finish. Inside, there is a cross-passage providing access to Portland Priory Close. A staircase in the centre of “Portland” has a late 17th-century rail. The north room has a fireplace dating to around 1700, with a fluted keystone and a basket arch lintel. The main roof truss shows evidence of wind-bracing. The rear wing features a heavy timber lintel with a wide chamfer, and a 2-light plain mullion window leads to the cellar.
