Description

College Yard is a group of burgage properties, likely dating from the 17th century and 18th century, that were remodelled in the 19th century. The buildings are constructed of rubble with Cotswold stone roofs, and the roofline is stepped. The frontages are angled to follow the shape of the plots. The buildings are two storeys high and feature irregular casement windows, mostly from the 20th century, arranged in a rough pattern of 4:4:2. The doorways are plain and have modern doors, placed irregularly. A two-storey weatherboarded extension with a jettied first floor was added in the 20th century to the east end. College Yard includes the rear extension of properties including Muriel Beach Thomas's premises, College Cottage, and Cobble Court Cottage. This well-preserved example of burgage development is considered particularly picturesque, especially when approached through the medieval alleyway arch.
