Description
This is a late 16th or 17th century house, originally with burgage frontage that may have included Bear Court. The front of the building has been altered. It is constructed of coursed and squared rubble with a chamfered plinth, and has a slate roof with concrete tiles to the rear, and brick end chimneys. The house stands two storeys high, with a cellar below. The front façade originally had two widely spaced windows, four-light mullioned windows with dripmoulds, replaced with wooden casements, but retaining the hollow chamfer on their surrounds. On the ground floor to the left is a 19th-century four-light casement and a simple panelled door. A wide central entry has a wooden canopy, which also shelters a glazing bar window to the right; a 20th-century shop-front projects to the right. The gable return has a hollow-chamfered attic window. A depiction from 1821 by Buckler shows the house with a pair of smaller doorways in the centre and without a through-alley.
