Description
Burford Grammar School Gymnasium is a building originally constructed in the 16th century, with alterations from the 17th century, a restoration in the late 19th century, and adaptations made in the mid-20th century. It is built of rubble with a Cotswold stone roof, featuring coped verges and rubble end chimneys. The structure has two storeys and an attic, with four hipped dormers and four windows on the first floor. The first-floor windows are three-light mullion windows with drips, while the two outer windows on the ground floor are four-light mullion windows with stilted drips. There is a blocked doorway to the left of centre, which has a moulded surround and vestigial drips; this was formerly a Tudor arched doorway with traceried spandrels, some of which still survive. At the rear, there is a late 19th-century wing in an L-plan configuration.
