Description

Cawley Priory is a house with an early 18th-century core and later 19th-century additions. The original south-west corner of the house, excluding the billiard room, retains its early design. It is two storeys and an attic, with a red tiled roof and stacks at either end. Dormer windows pierce the roof. The exterior features a dentilled eaves cornice, grey brick headers with vertical panels of red brick, and a red brick stringcourse above the ground floor. The façade originally had five window bays, but the central bay was later extended outwards as a two-story projection with a brick rectangular pediment above the first-floor window. A porch is situated on the ground floor, with a window above it on the first floor. Sash windows are set within segmental arches, each with rubbed brick voussoirs and painted keystones; the glazing bars remain intact. The main entrance is a six-panelled door within a semi-circular arched doorway. A single-storey addition, originally a billiard room, extends to the south, featuring grey brick headers and vertical panels of red brick, and windows similar in style to those in the older part of the house. A late 19th-century addition to the north is two storeys high, rising to three storeys at the northern end, with a single window in the third storey and a gable above. It has four window bays on the first and ground floors, a tiled roof, grey brick headers with vertical panels around each window, a brick band above the ground floor, and an irregular roofline.
