Description

This is an early 17th-century house located on the south side of West Pallant. The original house had a tiled roof with a gable facing south. A northern front and parapet were added later and refaced with roughcast in the 20th century. The house is three stories high with two windows on the second floor and four windows on the first floor. The windows are sash windows with flush boxes and intact glazing bars. Pilasters are present at each end of the front. A cornice with modillions runs along the top of the building. The doorway is accessed by four steps and features a rusticated, semi-circular arched surround, with a semi-circular arched door featuring six fielded panels. Internally, a fine staircase and panelling are present. The open well staircase has very slender turned balusters, columnar newels, carved brackets under the treads, and panelling above the inner string. A fretwork band sits beneath the balusters on the landing. Panelling is found in the ground floor and first floor rooms. Numbers 9 to 12, considered as a group, combine to form a cohesive architectural statement.
