Description

Groton House is a large red brick building from the early 18th century, likely incorporating parts of an earlier structure that may date back to the Restoration period. The house has been significantly enlarged with the addition of a north-east wing. It features a hipped slate roof with a modillion-moulded eaves cornice and flat-headed dormers with slated cheeks. The building has two storeys and attics.

The windows are double-hung sashes with glazing bars, set in cased frames with shallow reveals and gauged brick flat arches. The main south-west front displays a 1:3:1 window arrangement, with the central section of three windows slightly projecting forward. A central doorway is framed by a stone doorcase topped with a pediment on console brackets. There are four dormers on this front.

The north-west front has a five-window range and features a central French window beneath a 19th-century verandah porch with wide eaves, along with three dormers. A raised brick band runs between the storeys across the fronts. The south-east front includes two large two-storeyed splayed bays, with a three-window range and a four-window range situated between the bays, and seven dormers overall. The building is topped with several tall chimney stacks that have cornices.

Inside, there is a sitting room with neo-classical decoration, massive ceiling beams in both the sitting room and hall, and a well-crafted pine staircase with an open string and twisted balusters.
