Description
By-the-Way is a cottage that represents the remains of a larger house, dating from the late 16th century and restored in the 20th century. It features a timber frame with 20th-century brick infill and a plain tiled roof that is half-hipped to the right. The original layout was a smoke bay lobby entry plan. The building stands two storeys high with two framed bays, and a chimney bay on the left that contains a rebuilt stack. On the first floor, there are three 20th-century casement windows, while the ground floor has two windows and a 20th-century door located at the left end, which is set under a 4-centre arch. There is also a pentice extension at the left end.
