Description

Swiss Cottage, built around the 1850s, is designed in the Swiss Chalet style by Lord Barrington of Beckett Park as a summerhouse and playroom. It features a combination of timber framing and brick nogging, with gabled thatched roofs and a central brick chimney. The building has a Greek cross layout, consisting of one storey and an attic, with gable ends on each arm and gabled dormers facing southwest. All windows have diamond glazing, contributing to its picturesque rustic appearance, which is further enhanced by the use of cut timbers applied to the brick walls. The garden front, originally the entrance, includes a plank and batten door, and there is a similar door on the roadside front. The cottage is illustrated in Candida Lycett Green's book, English Cottages, published in 1982.
