Description
China House, located to the west of Beckett Hall, is a stone pavilion built around 1635-1655, possibly serving as a fishing lodge. It was likely constructed for either Sir Henry Marten or Sir George Pratt of Coleshill, who is believed to have owned Beckett Hall around 1650-1655. The building is traditionally attributed to the architect Inigo Jones. It features a square plan and is made of fine ashlar stone set on a wider square base of rubble stone. The roof is a wide, shallow pitched pyramid, covered with slate and has eaves that extend 7 feet to protect a terrace, which is likely an early 19th-century addition. A copper finial adorns the top. Each side of the pavilion has two windows flanking a central door, with cross-mullioned windows. The windows and doors are framed with fine moulded architraves that include a pulvinated frieze and flat cornices, while the doorcases are slightly more elaborate, featuring additional moulding that gives a slight projection.
