Keeper's House, Birkhall

Keeper's House at Birkhall is a picturesque single-storey cottage built around 1875 in a Swiss style. The structure is made of coursed, stugged granite featuring a base course, stop-chamfered arrises, and polished dressings, with timber mullions and transoms.

On the east elevation, there is a broad gabled bay to the left that includes a hoodmoulded tripartite window and a glazed arrowslit in the gablehead. To the right, there is a slightly recessed entrance porch with a narrow window and a roof that sweeps down. The door is accessed via a loggia and is a panelled door set in a stop-chamfered surround. An open porch with a gabled canopy supported by timber columns is located to the right, flanked by decorative iron railings.

The north elevation features an advanced gabled bay to the left with a tripartite window and a glazed arrowslit in the gablehead, while a narrow window is found in a recessed bay to the right.

On the south elevation, there is a slightly advanced gable with a small attic window, alongside a modern harled extension to the left.

The cottage has sash and case windows with large square panes, a roof covered in grey slates, and diamond stacks paired on pedestals at the gablehead and ridge. The gables are adorned with decorative scalloped timber barge boards and kingposts.

To the northwest of the house, there is a rectangular-plan range of kennels and a bothy, constructed from slatted timber and roofed with slate, featuring a stack at the west end.
