Description

The stables at Birkhall, dating from around 1800, have undergone alterations and additions in 1932-1933, which included a garage, six men's rooms, a sitting room, and a bathroom. This two-storey classical building is arranged in an L-plan, with a later car port wing at the rear that creates a U-plan layout. The structure is harled with granite ashlar dressings and a base course, and features square windows on the first floor.

On the northeast elevation, there are seven bays. The central bay is advanced and features a pediment that breaks the eaves, with a shallow segmental-arched carriage door opening at ground level and a round-arched window above. An iron lamp bracket is positioned above the door, and there is a cornice to the pediment. To the right of the central bay, there is a pedestrian door with a letterbox fanlight, and the flanking bays are widely spaced with regular fenestration. The bays to the left include a central door with a fanlight, regular fenestration, and a blind window on the first floor.

The northwest wing has a door with a rectangular fanlight to the left of its elevation, which is slightly recessed from the adjoining gable. There are windows above and in each floor of the flanking bay to the right, while the return gable to the southwest is blank.

The southwest elevation features a gabled timber addition that was added later, situated between the car port and the northwest wing, with irregular openings and doors.

The car port, which likely existed in some form as a coach house in 1867, was probably rebuilt around 1950 by A Graeme Henderson. It has a mansard attic roof and abuts a bank at the rear. The car port has eight and a half bays facing the courtyard, with a ground floor consisting of continuous square-headed carriage doors and eight swept-roofed dormers in the attic. There are three attic windows at the rear.

The building features small-pane glazing in sash and case windows, along with two pairs of casements. The roof is covered with graded grey and green slates, featuring a stone ridge and coped skews with angled skewputts, and the doors are boarded.
