Description
Gardener's Cottage at Balgonie Castle is a single-storey, three-bay cottage likely designed by Gillespie & Scott in the early 20th century, with alterations made in 1995. The cottage is constructed from squared and snecked rubble, featuring ashlar quoins and stone cills, and has an eaves course with stop-chamfered arrises.
The south elevation is symmetrical, showcasing a part-glazed timber door at the center, flanked by windows in the adjacent bays. The east elevation has a projecting offset chimney breast at the center, with a window to the right at ground level and another window to the left in the gablehead. The west elevation mirrors the east elevation.
On the north elevation, there is a lower porch that breaks the eaves at the center, featuring a timber door with a plate glass fanlight on the left side, and a window in the adjacent bay. The cottage has modern windows with a four-pane and plate glass glazing pattern, grey slate roofing, and coped ashlar stacks with cans, as well as ashlar coped stepped skews with moulded skewputts.
The outbuildings include a former summer house dated 1716, which has a piend roof and is integrated into the boundary wall. This outbuilding is made of squared and snecked rubble with stone margins, a cavetto cornice, and voussoirs. It features a door to the north with a dated lintel and a variety of openings to the west, some of which are round-headed, along with a stack to the southeast.
Additionally, there is a random rubble boundary wall that is part of a 17th-century walled garden, which is listed separately.
