Description

17 Winton Loan is an 18th-century cottage that was remodelled in the early 19th century, with a northern bay added in the mid-19th century. The cottage is a single-storey, four-bay structure built from whitewashed stone rubble, featuring some ashlar dressings around the windows.

The east elevation, which is the principal front, has an entrance with a boarded timber door and a painted surround located to the left of centre. There are windows with droved architraves in the flanking bays, and one window with a projecting sill in the outer right bay. The west elevation includes an architraved window towards the centre and a small window to the right. The south elevation has a small window to the left. The north elevation features a mid to late 20th-century brick external stack at the centre.

The cottage mainly has 12-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate roof that sweeps at the eaves, and a coped ashlar gablehead stack on the south side, along with a coped ashlar ridge stack. The north side has a mid to late 20th-century brick external stack with round cans.

The interior was not inspected in 1997.

There are two ancillary structures. The first is a mid-19th-century single-storey outbuilding located to the northeast of the cottage. This outbuilding is a single cell that connects to the cottage via a coped coursed rubble wall with a gateway running at right angles to the north end of the cottage on the east side. The north and south elevations are made of coursed stugged sandstone, while the east elevation is rubble and the west elevation is brick. It has an entrance with a boarded timber door on the south elevation, a window to the right, both with stone surrounds, and a pantile roof with raised gable ends featuring stugged coping. There is a small late 20th-century lean-to asphalted timber-framed extension on a brick base on the west side.

The second outbuilding, located to the east, dates from the 18th to early 19th century and has been altered. It is a single-storey structure parallel to the cottage, built from rubble with some sections of brick infill. This outbuilding has entrances with boarded timber doors on the far right and one with a stone surround to the left of the west elevation, along with small multi-pane fixed windows to the left of each door and two multi-pane windows in between, one of which was formerly a door. There are two windows on the east side and one on the north gable. It has a pantile roof and coped gables, with a brick stack on the south gable end. This outbuilding was noted as derelict in 1997.
