21 And 23 Winton Loan, Fairmilehead, Edinburgh

21 and 23 Winton Loan are a pair of double-fronted single-storey cottages located in Fairmilehead, Edinburgh. Built in the earlier to mid-19th century with minor alterations, these cottages were extended in the mid-20th century. They feature a symmetrical design and are constructed from coursed sandstone rubble, with stugged and droved arrises and dressings, while the rear and west extensions are harled. The cottages have coped gables.

On the east (principal) elevation, the plans are reversed. Each cottage has a slightly off-centre entrance with a boarded timber door and a three-light rectangular fanlight above. The outer bay has a two-light window with a timber mullion, which was formerly narrower single-light windows that have been widened. The inner bay features a single-light window. The openings have long and short surrounds.

The west (rear) elevation includes single-storey, flat-roofed extensions for both cottages, each with one main window on this side and two windows on the outer return.

The north and south elevations have blind gable ends. The cottages have 8 and 12-pane timber sash and case windows. The main body of the terrace has a grey slate roof, while the rear and west extensions have flat asphalted roofs. There are two coped stugged ashlar gablehead stacks, one on the rear pitch, and a single harled stack on each extension, both with round cans. The cottages also feature cast iron rainwater goods.

The interiors were not inspected in 1997.
