Description

27 Winton Loan in Fairmilehead, Edinburgh, is a terrace of three single-storey cottages, dating from the earlier to mid-19th century, with later additions. Originally, there may have been four single-fronted cottages and one double-fronted cottage. The eastern cottage is slightly taller and wider than the others. The two cottages on the west side are constructed from coursed sandstone rubble with droved arrises and dressings, along with some stugged dressings, while the eastern cottage is harled. The gables are coped and feature skewputts on No 31.

The principal elevation features the harled cottage on the left (No 31), which projects forward from the rest of the block. This original section has a central entrance flanked by windows. There is a later piended-roofed extension to the left with two windows that have projecting sills. The entrance has a replacement partially glazed timber door. The coursed rubble section to the right (Nos 27 and 29) has nine bays, with entrances featuring replacement boarded timber doors in the second and eighth bays. Each bay in between has a window, although the fourth bay has a smaller window, and the first bay has a blocked former window.

The rear elevation has irregular fenestration with a small flat-roofed extension to part of No 29. A replacement glazed door is visible for No 31, along with a bi-partite window to the left of No 31. The west elevation has a single narrow window on the left, while the east elevation is blank.

The cottages mainly feature 8 and 12-pane timber sash and case windows, and the roofs are covered with grey slate, including the piended section at the eastern end. There are coped droved and stugged ashlar gablehead stacks at each end, although the gable at the eastern end is obscured by the later extension. There is also a similar ridge stack and two later harled ridge stacks, along with a single harled stack on the northern pitch of the piended roofed extension and a single harled wallhead stack at the rear. All stacks have round cans, and there are cast-iron rainwater goods. The interiors have not been inspected since 1997.
