Description
Chimes Cottage is a single-storey cottage with an attic, dating from the earlier to mid 19th century, with later additions on the sides and alterations at the rear in the late 20th century. The cottage features a three-bay main block with a lower, single-bay addition on the outer right and a two-bay, piend-roofed addition on the outer left. The structure is built of whitewashed rubble.
On the west elevation, the main block has a centrally located timber panelled door at the ground level, which is sheltered by a later timber-bracketed gabled canopy. There are single windows in the flanking bays, and a single window in the lower addition to the outer right. The two-bay addition on the outer left has a timber panelled door to the right and a single window to the left.
The north elevation features a two-bay, piend-roofed addition projecting to the right, while a two-bay, piend-roofed projection is recessed to the left, with a timber door to the right and a timber-bracketed gabled canopy above. There is a single window to the left of this projection.
On the east elevation, the main block has single windows flanking a piend-roofed projection that is offset to the right of centre. There are gabled dormerheads to the left and right, and a window is centred in the single-bay addition on the outer left. The piend-roofed addition on the outer right has a single window offset to the left of centre.
The principal block features 12-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows, while some modern glazing is present on the sides and rear, along with rooflights. The roof is covered with grey slate, and there are coped apex stacks on the principal block, circular cans, a coped wallhead stack on the piend-roofed side addition, and an octagonal can.
The interior was not seen in 1999. There are ancillary structures, which are single-storey blocks abutting the boundary wall to the north and northeast, also with grey slate roofs. The boundary wall is made of whitewashed rubble and partially encloses the site, featuring a timber pedestrian entry gate.
