Description
The Buchanan Burial Ground at Ross Priory dates from the 18th century and is a square-plan enclosed burial ground located in woods to the southeast of the house. The entrance is situated at the center of the northwest wall, with a memorial positioned against the southeast wall.
The memorial features a gothick design, consisting of wall memorials with gabletted piers that frame a three-centred arch niche. The arch ring has cusped detailing, and there is a gabletted pedestal base for a plain cross finial. Inside the niche is a simple white marble incised slab, which contains the names "Hector McDonald and Jean Buchanan, 1733," though these names have faded over time. Yew trees frame the memorial, adding to its solemnity.
The gatepiers are made of droved ashlar and feature a sunken panel and corniced caps topped with large ball finials on tapered pedestals. The boundary wall is constructed of rubble with ashlar slab coping, although it has collapsed in places.
