Description
Top Farmhouse is a farmhouse that has been converted into a house. It likely started as two separate dwellings and consists of three sections. The main structure dates from the late 17th century, with later alterations made after a fire around 1721 and additional changes in the 19th century. The building is constructed from squared coursed ironstone rubble and features a steeply pitched stone slate roof, with Welsh slate and 20th-century tiles on the rear. The gables are stone-coped and have moulded kneelers. The ridge and end stacks have renewed blue brick shafts set on chamfered stone bases.
The main part of the farmhouse has a long rectangular plan with six units, plus an additional 19th-century section of two units on the left. The entrance, located to the left, has a four-panelled door with a wooden lintel and is flanked by three-light wooden casements, also with wooden lintels. To the right, there are two- and three-light casements, again with wooden lintels. On the first floor, there are six two-light wooden casements with wooden lintels, along with two gabled roof dormers that have two-light wooden casements, all featuring stone slate roofs and sides.
The 19th-century section is also made of coursed squared ironstone rubble and has a slate roof. It is a single storey plus an attic, with wooden casements and two half-dormers. Inside, the farmhouse has stop-chamfered beams and an inglenook fireplace with a chamfered bressumer, along with a butt purlin roof.
