Description

This is a milestone located on the north side of Rye Road in Hawkhurst, dating from the late 18th century. It is made of painted stone and features a 19th-century painted iron plate attached to it. The milestone stands about 2 feet high and has a rounded head. The iron plate is inscribed with the distances to London (48 miles) and Rye (14½ miles), although it is damaged at the base. The Kippings Cross and Flimwell Turnpike Trust was established by an Act of 1761, and this milestone is part of a good series that still survive.
