Description

Hawkhurst Place is a house dating to around 1500, with alterations made around 1600. It is timber-framed, displaying exposed close studding with plaster infill, and is weather-boarded to the return and rear elevations. The roof is tiled. The house stands on a stone base and was originally a hall house, later converted to a continuous jetty. It has two storeys and an attic. The roof is hipped to the left, with a gablet, and features stacks to the rear and a projecting stack offset to the left. The base of the left stack is English bond brick and contains a segmentally headed opening leading to the cellar. The front features three gables with moulded bargeboards, coved oriels incorporating moulded mullions and transoms with cornices, and small 2-light leaded casements in the gable heads. Three-bay windows are present on the ground floor, alongside 5-light mullioned and transomed windows to the oriels. Rib and stud doors are located to the centre left and centre right, set within 19th or 20th century round-headed surrounds. A catslide extension projects from the rear. The interior contains a smoke-blackened crown post roof, with octagonal crown posts approximately 5 feet high and shallow mouldings. There are also large scantling chamfered beams with stop-chamfers through hoist and inglenooks. Wainscotting dating to around 1600 is found, including a ground floor room with tendril-scroll frieze panels and fillet moulded wainscot partitions in the entrance hall. Historical records indicate the building was once of some account and was converted for the Peckham family in the late 16th century.
