Description
Birchbarns is a house that dates back to the 16th century or earlier, with cladding and extensions added in the mid-20th century. It features a timber frame, with red brick on the ground floor and weatherboarding on the first floor, topped by a plain tiled roof. Originally a hall house, it has two storeys. The early part of the building, located on the left, has a tall, steeply pitched hipped roof with gablets and a central cluster of moulded stacks, while the roof steps down slightly to the right and projects out. There are six wooden casement windows on the first floor, with the two on the left set at a slightly lower level. The ground floor has five windows, with the two in the centre featuring mullions and transoms, and there is a boarded door located in the side of a hipped porch to the centre left. The window styles are from the 20th century. The right-hand extension covers some of the exposed framing and an outshut that was noted in the old Provisional List.
