Description
Gun Green Farmhouse is a house dating from the 16th century or earlier, with alterations made in the mid-16th century and cladding added in the 18th century. The building is timber framed and weather boarded, topped with a plain tiled roof. It is likely a hall house with a cross-wing. The structure has two storeys and an attic, featuring a hipped roof and a half hipped cross-wing to the left, with the rear slope of the wing also hipped and ending in a gablet. There is a central stack. The cross-wing includes a small leaded two-light gable window, and on each floor below, there are three-light casements with two-light sidelights on the first floor. The main range has two and three-light casements on the first floor and a three-light window to the right on the ground floor. The central entrance door consists of six panels and is topped with a flat hood supported by brackets, leading to a glazed 20th-century outer door. The left return features casements and a glazed door with a flat hood. There is a mid-20th-century flat-roofed extension at the rear. Inside, the front range has a rebuilt staggered purlin roof that reuses 16th-century timbers, with window mullion mortices in the purlins and floor joists repurposed as rafters. The cross-wing has a queen-post roof and a large panel frame with mid rails. The full frame is visible, showcasing large gunstock posts, with the cross-wing interrupting the frame of the front range. The interior also features stop-chamfered beams and large brick fireplaces. Documentary evidence indicates building activity around 1540.
