Description
Duval’s Farmhouse is a house, possibly dating back to the 16th century or earlier, with alterations made around 1670 and in the early 19th century. It is timber framed and largely weather boarded, with a portion of the ground floor constructed of red brick. The roof is covered in plain tiles. The house originated as a hall house. It has two storeys, set on a plinth, with a gabled roof and a tall stack cluster to the right side. A lean-to extension is situated at the end of the right side. There are three three-light metal casement windows on each floor, and a smaller top-hung wooden casement window in the upper left corner. The front door consists of six panels, topped with a flat hood supported by brackets. A sandstone basement is located at the end to the left. A single-storey extension of red brick and weather board, with a tiled roof, adjoins the left side.
The interior reveals the full timber frame. A cambered central tie beam is visible, with mortice holes indicating the former presence of crown posts, which have now been removed. The tie beams are soot-blackened. Stone fire surrounds are present on both floors with simple chamfers. Double roll and fillet moulded main beams, and ovolo and fillet moulded mullion windows are found throughout, including a seven-light range on the rear first floor. The floors and stack were likely inserted around 1670, as evidenced by an inventory describing the house from that period.
