Description

This is a milestone located on the B3400, dating from the early 19th century. It is made of painted stone and features cast-iron plates. The tall stone has a segmental head, with a rectangular cast-iron plate on either side that is inscribed with the distances to London (54 miles), Basingstoke (8 miles), and Andover (10 miles). The Andover and Basingstoke turnpike was opened in 1754, and this milestone is part of a series along that route. It is a notable example of an early 19th-century milestone with inscribed cast-iron plates.
