Description
Nos. 12 and 14 Southington are a pair of attached cottages dating from the 18th century, which were remodeled around the early 19th century and extended later in the 19th century. The cottages are constructed of rendered brick and tile-hung timber frame, with red brick at the rear. They have a clay plain tile roof featuring both gabled and hipped ends, along with rendered brick axial and gable-end stacks.
The cottages are two stories tall and present a four-window south front, with a rendered ground floor and tile-hung first floor. They feature 16-pane sash windows and two pilastered doorcases topped with pedimented canopies supported by long console brackets, along with rectangular overlights and flush-panelled doors. At the rear, there is a two-storey red brick outshut with casement windows that have glazing bars.
Inside, No. 14 includes a stop-chamfered ceiling beam, plank doors, and a later 19th-century chimneypiece. No. 12 features a 19th-century staircase. Both cottages have a reconstructed 18th-century roof structure with clasped purlins.
