Description

Milestone located on the north side of Hawkhurst High Street, dating from the late 18th century. It is made of painted stone and features a painted iron plate. The milestone stands about 2 feet high and has a rounded head. The plate is inscribed with the distances to London (47 miles) and Rye (15½ miles). This milestone is part of a good series that survives from the Kippings Cross and Flimwell Turnpike Trust, which was established by an Act of 1762.
