Description
Barnfield Cottage and the attached barn are a mid-19th century cottage and barn located on the south side of Hawkhurst High Street. The cottage is timber framed and weather-boarded, sitting on a sandstone base, with a plain tiled roof. It is two storeys tall and features a tall sandstone base on the left return, a double span roof, and slacks to the rear left and end right. The front has three wooden casement windows on the sash floor, a boarded door in the centre right with a raking hood, and a six-panel door on the left return with a pediment-shaped hood. This building was originally part of a pair of cottages used for a coach building business associated with the adjacent barn.
The two-storey barn has two paired wooden casement windows on the first floor and one on the ground floor, along with a multi-pane window to the right and cast doors to the left. Inside, the barn features a brick floor, and paired tie beams tied with iron rods support the wide span upper floor. There is a rear stack for a forge, and remnants of a hoist pulley and pulley shafts and wheels that were used to drive machinery are still present.
