Description
Chittenden Cottage is a house that dates back to the 16th century or earlier and was restored in the late 19th century. It features a timber frame, with some parts restored and exposed, and plaster infill on a base of red and blue brick. The cottage also has sections that are tile hung and a plain tiled roof. It is likely a hall house with a cross-wing. The building has two storeys and a hipped roof, with a projecting jettied and hipped cross-wing on the right side, which includes a stack positioned centrally to the right. The main range has two wooden casements on each floor, while the cross-wing has two on the first floor and one on the ground floor. There are boarded doors on both the left and right sides of a recessed porch, which features brackets supporting the jetty to the left of the cross-wing. The interior is fully framed. George Devey restored and extended the adjacent Chittenden while working on Marlborough House School across the street between 1879 and 1880, and he may have also restored this building during that time.
