Description

The East Barn at New Barn Farm is a barn dating from around the mid-18th century. It features a weatherboarded timber frame, with parts of the frame exposed and brick infilling. The walls have been partly rebuilt using flint and brick, and the roof is clad in asbestos, with hipped and half-hipped ends.

The barn has a six-bay design with narrow end bays, totaling eight bays. On the southeast side, the timber framing is exposed with red brick infilling resting on a low brick plinth, and there are blocked weatherboarded cart entrances. The northwest side and northeast end are weatherboarded, while the southwest end has been partly rebuilt in brick and flint, with weatherboarding above. There are later cart entrances at the ends.

Inside, the barn features cut jowled arcade-posts with straight braces connecting to the arcade-plates and tie-beams. The roof structure includes queen-strut and collar trusses, staggered tenoned purlins with short straight wind-braces, and is completed with common-rafter couples. The wall framing on the northwest side and northeast end consists of close-studding on a low brick plinth, while the southeast side has square framing with brick infilling. This barn is a good example of an 18th-century aisled timber-framed structure.
