Description
The Fox and Hounds Public House is an early 19th-century building that underwent restoration and re-fronting around 1900. It features a combination of timber-frame and brickwork, topped with a tile roof. The front (north) elevation showcases an elaborate Edwardian Tudor style applied to a simple structure, with gables on either side above jetties on each floor. The building has two storeys and an attic, with a total of five windows across the front, and a single-storeyed wing on the east side that has two windows.
The gables and larger end gables are adorned with deep barge-boards that include pierced circles linked by flowing bands, supported at the base by curved brackets. The first and second floors display exposed framing with curved braces, while the jetties are supported by brackets shaped like hammer beams. The ground floor is constructed of brickwork in Flemish bond, and the plain end walls of the original building are made of red brick in English bond.
The windows include casements and splayed bays on brackets beneath the side gables, with plain lights on the central and west side of the ground floor. A Tudor arch in the center frames a splayed bay and a boarded door, with the main entrance located at the west end. The west gable features a small attic window, a first-floor oriel, and a group of three small casements near the entrance. The east side wing is simpler but includes an oriel within a gable at the center of the east elevation, showcasing an exposed frame and ornamental barge-board.
