Description

Hazelhanger Farm Barn is a barn dating from the late 18th century or early 19th century, with alterations made in the late 19th century. It features a timber frame with weatherboard cladding set on a red brick plinth laid in Flemish bond. The barn has a half-hipped roof covered in corrugated iron, which likely replaced an original thatch, and there is a tile-roofed lean-to added later. The structure consists of five bays, with a rear aisle and opposing central cart entries; the rear entry includes an added hipped-roof midstrey. A lean-to has also been added against the right gable. Much of the original deep weatherboarding remains intact. There is a replacement board cart door on the south side, a wide entrance, and a small window on the lean-to. The left return features a two-light window with replacement glazing and two inserted openings in the brick plinth.

Inside, the timber frame is nearly complete, with aisle posts resting on brick plinths. The posts have square-cut or gunstock jowls and are supported by straight braces to the plates and tie-beams. The barn includes raking wall struts and collared queen-post roof trusses with principal rafters that clasp diagonally-set purlins. The ridge is yoked with planks, and the original rafters remain, along with laths on the north side, some still attached to string, which likely indicates that thatch was once used as roofing material.
