Description
The South Barn at Old Barn Farm is a barn dating from the late 16th century, with alterations made in the 18th century. It features a timber frame with four bays, and the exterior is weather-boarded, sitting on a plinth made of both sandstone and brick. The barn has a half-hipped roof covered with old tiles. In the 18th or early 19th century, three weather-boarded ventilation slits were added on each side. At the rear, there is a lean-to extension supported by rustic wooden posts, which is not considered of special interest.
Inside, the barn retains late 16th century gunstock jowled upright posts, along with tie beams and curved braces. The wall frame includes a midrail, and the end walls are supported by four curved tension braces from the 16th century. In the 18th century, the side walls were modified to primarily feature diagonal tension braces, and the roof was also altered. The roof structure includes angled queen struts with through purlins and a ridgepiece.
