Description

Barn. Erected in the second half of the 18th century, with the westernmost nine bays constructed somewhat earlier than the easternmost four bays. Reused timbers from the 17th century or earlier are incorporated into the structure. This timber-framed barn sits on a 4-foot-high sandstone plinth, with the easternmost four bays having a brick plinth instead. The exterior is faced in weatherboarding, some of which is tarred, and has a half-hipped corrugated iron roof. A lean-to adjoins the south side. There are three cart entrances. Internally, most upright posts have gunstock jowls, potentially dating back to the late 16th century, while the posts on either side of the cart entrances have a typical 18th-century profile. The wall frame exhibits a pattern of diagonal braces separated by a midrail. The roof features through purlins and a ridgepiece with knees pegged into the collar beam. The easternmost four bays have a staggered purlin roof and evidence of weathering on the tenth bay posts. One cart entrance incorporates reused timber with diamond-shaped grooves for mullions. The easternmost bay has been ceiled over and is partially used as stabling, with a lining of large planks secured with handmade nails. Other interior features include wooden saddle hooks, a fixed loft ladder, and a brick-drained floor. The lean-to has a through purlin roof with angled queen struts, and its posts are set on brick padstones. Historically, the lean-to served as a calf pen, calf shed, and faltering pens.
