Description
Chiddingstone Mill Barn is a barn that likely dates from the late 17th century. It is timber-framed and clad in weatherboarding, standing on a sandstone base. The roof is tiled, hipped to the left and gable-ended to the right. The barn features a tall cart entrance facing the road and consists of three bays. It has jowled upright posts and a queen post roof with through purlins, but lacks a ridgepiece. Some later nailed diagonal struts have been added for strengthening. The wall frame includes a mid rail and curved tension braces at the ends and in the central bay. There are some reused timbers in the wall plate and roof. One bay has had its curved braces from the tie beam removed and replaced with a vertical timber and a midrail partition, although there is no evidence that this end was ever floored. The barn has outshuts on three sides: to the left, there are animal feeding troughs and thick elm weatherboarding; at the rear, there are sawn timbers; and to the right, there are some vertical planks.
