Description

Clays Barn is a barn built in the 18th century, incorporating some upright posts and tension braces from the late 16th or early 17th century. It features a timber frame with four bays, standing on a sandstone plinth and clad in weatherboarding, including some old tarred elm weatherboarding at the rear. The barn has a double cart entrance and a roof now covered in corrugated iron sheeting. The roof structure includes a queen post with through purlins, oak rafters, and a ridge piece. Seven of the upright posts have gunstock jowls, and several contain slots for curved beams. The right-hand end of the barn may have been floored at one time and features several large curved braces from the 17th century or earlier in the wall frame. The wall frame includes a midrail, while the other bays have diagonal tension braces from the 18th century. The right side end bays also have diagonal wind braces supporting the roof. Carpenter's marks from the 18th century are present, and there are later bolted dragon posts added to strengthen the upright posts. A 20th-century lean-to extension on the left side is not of special interest.
