Description
Potters Barn is a barn that was later used for storage, dating from the mid to late 18th century. It is timber-framed and covered in weatherboarding, standing on a plinth of Bargate stone with some brick buttresses and a half-hipped tiled roof. The barn consists of five bays, with the northernmost three bays likely predating the southern two.
On the exterior, the east elevation features double cart doors, which have been blocked. The west elevation includes a projecting gabled cart entrance, likely from the later building phase, as rafters can be seen behind it. The east elevation also has three later inserted windows. Attached to the south elevation is a lean-to outbuilding made of Bargate stone and brick, probably from the late 18th century. There is an additional extension at the northwest with a corrugated roof that appears to be from the 20th century.
Inside, the wall frame includes a midrail and diagonal tension braces. The roof structure of the northern three bays features queenposts, collar beams, and staggered purlins. The southern two bays have angled queenstruts, and the purlins in this section are not staggered. There are additional diagonal tension braces in the roof, and some upright posts have 19th-century bolted knees.
