Description
The Old School House is a cottage that dates back to the 16th century, with additions from the 17th and 19th centuries. It features a timber frame set on a sandstone plinth, with brick infill and scalloped tile hanging on the street-facing side. The ground floor on the south side is made of sandstone rubble, while there are brick extensions to the north, all covered by plain tiled roofs. The building is two storeys high, with a gable on the right side of the street front and a gabled dormer on the left. There is one casement window in each gable and two windows on the ground floor. The right-hand return front, facing south, has a central offset stack at the rear. The right gable has a dormer on the left, with the roof sloping down and continuing as a hip over a central porch that features a partially glazed door flanked by windows. There is also a three-light window at both ends and on the ground floor. The school extension to the north is of no special interest. Inside, the cottage has stop-chamfered spine beams and ceiling joists, a deep brick fireplace with an oven, and an old rear wall that has been preserved internally.
