Description
Barn. Probably built in the early 16th century, with two additional bays added in the late 17th or early 18th century. Minor 20th-century alterations have been made. The barn is timber-framed and clad with weatherboarding, and has a gabled roof now covered in corrugated iron. There are breezeblocks to the eastern end, and some 20th-century openings to the north. The original cart entrance on the north side has been covered with weatherboarding. A 20th-century wooden shelter to the south is not of special interest.
The interior has five bays. The western three bays have a crownpost roof, with square crownposts, collar beams, and upbraces. One post also has a downbrace and a socket for another. Sans-purlin rafters are present, except in the western bay which retains two original rafters, the remaining rafters being replaced in the 20th century. The wall frame has a midrail with arched tension braces to the end bays and western side. The framing to the lower cart entrance on the south side remains, and the taller cart entrance on the north side retains its post sockets. The upright posts are jowled. The two easternmost bays have an angled queen strut roof with original pegged rafters, without a ridgepiece or purlins. A wooden partition is present in the end bay, constructed with wide horizontal boards and including a reused top or bottom of a diamond-mullioned window. This bay also has a floored end.
