Description

Gabriels Manor is a restored, framed and half-timbered structure dating to the 16th century, built on the site of an earlier manor house that was destroyed by fire approximately 10 years ago. The east elevation features three gabled ends with ornamental carved bargeboards and pendants. The house is two storeys high with an attic, and has leaded casement windows throughout. Three projecting octagonal bays are present on the ground floor, each with centrally placed windows above them on each storey. The rear elevation retains an original tall Tudor stack with a brick base and stone dressings. Compared to 19th-century illustrations, the present structure is a faithful replica of the original Gabriels Manor. The interior is largely uninteresting, though it contains reinstated 16th-century beams and joists. Historically, the house was associated with the Stanford family, who owned the manor in the 18th and 19th centuries. It was likely built in 1570 by Nicholas Scyliard, who owned the neighbouring Manor of Delaware.
