Description
Old Cottage is a timber-frame cottage dating to the 16th and 18th centuries, situated in Duke Street, Micheldever. The original structure has wattle and daub infill panels between timber framing, and a thatched roof. The cottage is two storeys high with four bays, and a small central bay for the doorway. The timber frame is largely complete with square panels and braces. The left-hand bay was rebuilt in the 18th century using scantling timber. The front elevation features a central, 19th-century tiled gabled porch, rendered and incorporating a window where a door would have been. To either side of the porch are three-light casement windows, and at the right end, a two-light casement window. The left-hand 18th-century bay has bow windows. Above each ground-floor window, there is a two-light casement. All the windows are 20th-century replacements. The roof is half-hipped at the left end and has an outshot to the right. A central ridge stack, likely inserted in the screens passage, is present. At the rear, a 20th-century thatched wing has been added, abutting the outshot at the right end.
