Description

Manor Cottage is a timber-framed cottage dating from around 1600, with additions from the 18th century. It is located on Kenninghall Road, Garboldisham. The original structure is three bays wide and two storeys high, with rendered wattle and daub infill between the timber framing and a thatched roof. The plan was originally a lobby entrance design, although this has been altered. A C20 rustic timber porch now hides the door, which is located on the right side of the building. All the windows are C20 casements; those on the upper floor have gabled heads, with the thatch above matching a C18 dormer in the additional bay to the right. The roof is gabled, with the 18th-century bay having a lower roofline. There is an internal gable stack on the right side and a ridge stack to the left of the original door. The rear elevation features an outshut built of random brick and flint, with a pantiled roof and C20 windows. The south gable is constructed of brick in a chequered pattern, using burnt headers; a flat brick string course runs along the eaves line, with a brick parapet above kneelers. Inside, the timber framing is close-studded. The lounge has plain chamfered stops to a bridging beam. Remnants of a five-light diamond mullion window remain, looking into the rear outshut, with the mullions replaced in 1982. Similar remains are visible in a first-floor room facing east, and another room facing north. The roof structure is a queen strut roof with clasping purlins and collars, with only one tie beam remaining on large arched braces.
